Since the Cocks were flaccid this week with no match, I played with the very sympa Paris Japanese Rugby Football Club. I was one of four non-Japanese on the team. (There were also two Frenchies and an Italian.) We lost the match, but it was very close, and we were in it to the final gun (or whistle, I guess)… and, given that the PJRFC has never won a match, I can’t say that I felt much shame in losing. The match was followed by a lunch of oysters and Sancerre, then by a party on Saturday night at a Japanese restaurant. Great times–all the players’ wives were there, and most were drunk after approximately 35 seconds. There was a gift raffle (I brought home a t-shirt with the words “fighting spirit” on it in Japanese characters and a box of chocolates; my Parisian friend won a digital camera…), great Japanese food and enough Asahi beer to drown a sumo wrestler. Good times all around.
