Ja, Sinterklaas is hier vandaag… It’s Dec. 6, which means that Sinterklaas is arrving in the Netherlands today. The Dutch must like to get their gifts early because, according to their tradition, Santa Claus (Sinterklaas) arrives on Dec. 6 every year to bring toys to the young ‘uns. But that’s not the best part. The best part is that he’s accompanied by “six to eight” black helpers (who, if memory serves, are black because they’re chimney sweesps or coal miners or some such) all named Zwarte (Black) Piet. Good kids get gifts and the like, but get this… bad kids get thrown into a cage by one or more Zwarte Piet(s) and get shipped off to Spain! Spain, as punishment? Hmmm, let’s see: Rotterdam in December, or Tenerife? Utrecht or Granada? Maastricht or Madrid? Black man, put me in your box. I’ve been a bad boy…
